A Cardboard Bicycle That Can Change The World

Wow, another news-worthy invention! If I had to choose between driving a car or writing a cardboard Bicycle to work and everywhere, the car would lose out each time. Easy choice huh? Unlike driving a car routinely which can have a negative impact on your heart and lungs, the bicycle even made out of cardboard can help you optimize health and add years to life. And with the state of the economy, not to mention $5 dollar gas prices, most people would choose the Cardboard Bicycle.
This bicycle is made mostly of cardboard and has the potential to reinvent the process of transportation from the
world's most congested cities to the poorest areas of Africa, Said Izhar Gafni, who is an
expert in designing automated mass-production lines. He is an amateur
cycling enthusiast who for years wrestle with the idea of making a bicycle
from cardboard. During a recent
demonstration he cited that after much trial and error, his latest prototype has
now proven itself and mass production will begin in a few months.
"I was always fascinated by applying unconventional technologies to
materials and I did this on several occasions. But this was the
culmination of a few things that came together. I worked for four years
to cancel out the corrugated cardboard's weak structural points," -Gafni
"Making a cardboard box is easy and it can
be very strong and durable, but to make a bicycle was extremely
difficult and I had to find the right way to fold the cardboard in
several different directions. It took a year and a half, with lots of
testing and failure until I got it right," -Gafni
Cardboard, made of wood pulp, was invented in the 19th century as sturdy
packaging for carrying other more valuable objects, it has rarely been
considered as raw material for things usually made of much stronger
materials, such as metal. This is the most unusual use of cardboard I have seen in years. At $20 a pop everyone in the world will own a cardboard bicycle.

It´s an unusual form of use cardboard, but it is not a very practical one. I go everyday to work in a bicycle (a quite normal indeed) and the most important capability of it is the reliability. A very old bicycle with wide tires (that seldom punctures) very well maintained does fine. A used bicycle in that conditions can be acquired for less than 100 u$s.
